Ms. Jensen Academic Dean Ancient History Digs Into the PastOn Monday of this week Mr. Belcheff’s class had the astounding opportunity to zoom with Dr. François Desset. Dr. Desset recently deciphered the ancient Elamite language, which is a 4,500 year old cuneiform type language used in the Kingdom of Elam, modern day Iran. This language was discovered by archeologists in 1901, but deciphering it has eluded archeologists and linguists since then, until Dr. Desset that is. Mr. Belcheff’s class wrote him congratulatory letters, which opened the dialogue and led to the class’s fantastic opportunity to talk with him. You can read more about this amazing discover HERE. Fun in the Science DepartmentHere is a glimpse into our fantastic physics department. Pictured below, students diligently and creatively work to make motors with just a D battery, copper wire, and magnets! They are attempting to beat the previous speed record, which is 3950rpm. This requires that they develop new ways to make their motors more efficient, which they are determined to do. Events, Culture, and ClubsRetreat UpdateIt is with a heavy heart that I inform our community that we will have to cancel the Lost Canyon High School Retreat this year. We had postponed it to April back when everything was closed down in August. In revisiting the issue this semester, we determined that with the difficulties we have had trying to plan social events and case loads being what they are, that we will have to cancel. We ARE still slated to have our retreat for the 2021-2022 school year in August and will look forward to that event with great relish. Be on the lookout for more information later this semester! Please direct any questions or lamentations to Dean of Students, Ms. Schripsema at sschripsema@northphoenixprep.org. Nominate a Teacher for the Silver Apple Award!Until March 12th, 3TV and Arizona Bank and Trust will be taking nominations for their Silver Apple Teacher Excellence Award. Nominate a teacher by filling out the linked form and describing “Why is this teacher special?” on the form.
